THE KIND GIRL- Two friends Ankit and Zeeshan, decided to take a break from work and make a trip to Mussoorie, a famous hill station in Uttarakhand, India As their car drove through the turns of the mountains, the temperature started to fall. It was getting colder. It was early December and snowfall generally started by mid-December each year, in that area. Zeeshan was sitting on the seat next to the driving seat and Ankit was driving. "We should have started earlier," remarked Ankit. "Right… the light is fading, soon it would be dusk," said Zeeshan. "I do not think we can reach the hotel before 9 pm." As they crossed the next turn, they could see many vehicles a little distance away. Ankit asked a local man what happened. The man told him that there had been a landslide and a long line of vehicles had been stuck for hours. "What should we do now?" asked Zeeshan. "I guess it is better to reverse the car. Then, we can look for a place to stay the night and try tomorrow morning again," said Ankit. So, Ankit reversed the car. After driving for a short distance, they came onto a side road. "We should take this side road, this is our only chance!" said Ankit. They drove down the mud track. After some time, they came to a small house with slopping roof. They got down. There were no other houses ahead. There was a well in front of the house. "It is almost dark, Ankit, this place is our only hope," said Zeeshan. They looked for a doorbell but found none. So Zeeshan knocked on a windowpane. When no one answered, they looked through the window. The window was broken. They could see a drawing room with a sofa and a fireplace. There was dust over everything. There seemed to be nobody in the house. The boys decided to enter the house as it was not locked. They brought blankets from the car and went inside the house. They also had some snacks, which they had bought earlier. The boys ate them. The house was dusty but still was comfortable and peaceful. With every passing minute, the house was getting colder. Thus, both the friends gathered some branches from outside and lit a fire in the fireplace. Zeeshan lay down on the sofa, while Ankit joined two chairs and covered himself with the blanket. The room had now become warm and the two friends soon fell asleep. Sometimes later, they both suddenly woke up. A girl was standing next to the fireplace. She was glowing in the dark. Ankit went near Zeeshan nervously. Zeeshan called out," Who is there?" The girl said something that they could not understand. She seemed to be cold and kept sitting near the fireplace, till the fire died down. Then she disappeared as suddenly she had appeared. The friends thought that she might also came to take a shelter till the fire was there. Actually they were too tired to think about the girl. They lay awake for some time, and then lay down to sleep. In the morning, both the friends got up and closely examined the place where the girl sat the night before. To their amazement, they found a patch of wet water by the fireplace. But there were no foot prints in the dust near that patch. The friends hurried out to their car and started their journey. The road had cleared and they reached Mussoorie. Once they reached the hotel, they asked about the deserted house they were in. The manager told them that the house had been empty for years. The people who owned it had a girl. She was very kind and helpful. But one day, she fell in the well in front of the house and died. Soon after that ,her parents also died due to illness. They lost all the interest in living due to the unfortunate death of their daughter. But it is believed that her soul still lives in her house. The friends were amazed when they heard the story. And they visited the house on their way back, just to thank the soul of the kind girl. BY- Anshul Gautam
